Resolved Question: How to be a pleasant guest?

Jan 31, 2009 @ 03:09 pm by

Hi,
I’m 15 years old, and this summer I am going on a class exchange trip to Germany. Each student is paired with a family, with whom they will stay for 3 weeks. We will be in a small german town called Nagold.
I was wondering what kind of things german families would expect as far as etiquette, etc… I do not want to seem like a hassle, i want to be the most polite, pleasant, and all around best guest I can be.

Does anyone have any suggestions as what to, and what not to do?
oh! and i was thinking of bringing the family a gift, but i dont know what would be a meaningful, but not cheesey gift to give?

Voting Question: What do you get a girl from Germany who’s turning 18?

Jan 31, 2009 @ 03:05 pm by

My “exchange student” is turning eighteen and
I have no idea what to get her.
Do you have any ideas?
I’m from California and I want to get her something
that can be fun as well as represent America.

Is there anything in particular that Germans love?
(Specific food, clothing, music, etc.?)

Something under $30 would be nice (:
Thanks!

Open Question: Ah! this guy is driving me crazy?

Jan 31, 2009 @ 03:05 pm by

Ok, first of all before you read this, I wanted to let you know I’m not one of those bad little girls who want to grow up too fast… I really am a good girl. Ok so there’s this guy. I’ve known him since second grade, and a couple years ago, I started to really like him. He is the most popular kid in the school and he had had one gf before. So he asked me to the dance, and my parents don’t let me do anything with boys until im 16 so I told him no because my parents wouldn’t let me. It was so sad to say no! So he was acting really mad at me for like a year, and then he kinda became nicer. Then the next year, he went to mexico (a student exchange program) and came back with a gf. I tried not to care, and I just focused on my schoolwork. Something happened between them and they broke up…. and now this year, he had another gf, (my friend) and Idk what happened but they aren’t going out anymore… and both of their statuses are single. He has been acting really nice to me lately… but I feel like I shouldn’t like him. I mean hes 13 and has had three gf’s. And on his face book profile his interests are ‘girls’ and he always talks about how cool and awesome he is. But a couple days ago he called me for homework and I was so nervous talking to him… he said thanks like three times… idk what to think!he can be so nice…. and then with his friends he acts so mean!!! Im trying not to like him….. but this crush is huge and hes the onley boy I’ve really ‘like-liked’. What should I do?

Voting Question: Can a Japanese apply for AMEX card?

Jan 31, 2009 @ 02:37 pm by

I am a international student from Japan and thinking about getting an AMEX card, but is that possible for me to get it in the U.S.?
There is a social security number box on the form, and I obviously don’t have it…
If it is possible, how much is 1 point worth when exchanged with other currency like yen?

Resolved Question: What do you think of finding someone to play-act the role of your boyfriend just to please your parents? ?

Jan 31, 2009 @ 08:25 am by

BEIJING: A Peking University student has put in an advertisement in a Chinese web site offering 10,000 Yuan (Rs 71,000) to anyone who would play the role of her boyfriend when she visits her home during the ongoing Spring Festival.

She is not the only one using surrogate boy friend or girl friend to please parents anxious to see their wards married and settled in life while hoping for a grand child in future. In most cases, there is no exchange of money. Friends of students studying or working in cities help each other out on this score when it comes to visiting their home villages during the Spring Festival.

“I did not go home this time. I can no longer handle questions about why I cannot find a boy friend or husband,” says Zhang Xiao, a software engineer in Beijing, told TNN. The Peking University student who put in the advertisement sought a boy with acting talent. She is obviously worried that shrewd relatives might be able to smell a rat if the boy did not act like a real lover. It is apparent she has been saving the money for this purpose for a long time.

In most cases, Chinese boys and girls find their love in school or in the first year or two of college. But there are many who are left out or broke away from their lovers in a few years. This is when the pursuit for Mr or Ms Right begins all over again. Parents usually do not interfere in the choice of lovers although there are some “don’ts” that wards must adhere to. For example, girls are advised to avoid boys from certain provinces because parents are biased against people from certain parts of China.

What parents insist on is regular reporting. They want to be told that the children are on their way to find life partners. Spring Festival is the time when migrant children return home. It is also the time when love and romance is in the air and marriages are planned or performed.

But for some unlucky ones, it is also the time when they must be ready to face questions for which they have no answers.
Edit: No Bear…i married mine you know!
