The greatest challenge I will face as an ALT in Japan is communicating effectively with the school administration, co-teachers, and students. I have spent the past three years refining my communication techniques to better facilitate information exchange both within and outside of the classroom. Korean is a high context language which assumes the receiver has certain information. I am a native speaker of English which is a low context language in which very little is understood and conversation is more explicit. I believe that Japanese is also a high context language that will challenge me for many years.

When I am speaking to my superiors I engage them in a positive and respectful manner. I never frame the issue as a “ me versus you” problem; rather, I frame the issue as “we versus the problem” scenario.I am an active listener and participant in conversation with my superiors and I accept criticism and implement feedback immediately. Finally, I never take anything personal. I don’t believe in personalizing conflicts because most problems are either human error or lack of communication. Neither situation will be resolved positively by me losing my professionalism.

I currently have eight co-teachers and each one has a different teaching style and expectation for their class. Inside the classroom I am respectful and I defer to the Korean teacher. In some classes I write and execute the lesson plan without input from my co-teacher. In other classes I don’t speak but I make sure that the teacher knows I am prepared to assist in any way they deem appropriate. I feel they know the students better than I do and I can best serve the school by remaining flexible.

When I am speaking to the students I try to be as open and as accessible as possible. I am usually in my office thirty minutes prior to the start of class for general conversation. They are also encouraged to join the free adult class I run during the lunch break. I am also available after school for tutoring as well. The lesson plans I design always take into consideration their interest within the context of educational goals.

Nov 30, 2009 @ 09:27 pm by

Me and my friend want to go to the 2012 summer Olympics.. she has a cousin that lives in england and then we want to see our friend that was an exchange student at our school who lives in Turkey. Do you have any ideas on how we could raise money for this? Also how much do you think something like this would cost. For a plane ticket from America to England at least one ticket for an event at the Olympics a plane ticket to turkey from england and then back home?
Thank You!

Open Question: All of my relationships involved the man leaving because of long distance, what does that mean?

Nov 30, 2009 @ 06:16 pm by

my first serious relationship was long distance, i live in the US and he lived in England. It lasted for two years and i think most of the issues was the long distance. first he visited me for a week, then i went there for 10 days, then he came and lived with me for 2.5 months and then i went to live with him for 6 months. each visit was wonderful but i knew i would eventually have to go back home. then my second relationship was not necessarily official but a similar situation occurred. i dated a guy for almost 7 or 8 months. we met at school but he was an exchange student. i knew that eventually at the end of the semester he would have to leave but we still thought maybe we could make it work. he went back home and i even went to visit him for about a week. it was all wonderful, but again i left to go home and he stayed there. due to his issues and mine the long distance could not work. now i’ve met an amazing man who i started dating 3 months ago. we actually are from the same town and went to high school together never really having any interest. but… he is in the marines, in california and i am on the east coast. the long distance is working for now and hes coming home soon for about 10 days and then i will visit him for 2 weeks. but again, he is leaving to deploy for 6 months with limited contact. ive obviously done long distance and i feel like we can do it because he is completely opposite of what ive ever been involved with. why do i keep going in these circles? why do i date men who i know are leaving? what is the reason? i want to say i am beginning to fall in love with this man but he has a few more years of service and i would have to move my life for him at least for those few years. is this another lost cause? someone figure out my head please????

Resolved Question: How to deal with an annoying family member?

Nov 30, 2009 @ 04:09 pm by

Okay, I’ve got a problem here. I have a cousin that’s just SO ANNOYING. I only see her on Holidays, when I see all my family, but once she sees me, she starts talking and JUST NEVER SHUTS UP. I understand if she missed me and wanted to talk, but jeez! She won’t give me the chance to talk to anyone else. I keep wanting to get to talk with my half cousin, whom I used to be close with but not anymore, but before I can the annoying cousin comes up to me. And once she starts, she don’t stop talking until she leaves. I wouldn’t mind as much IF we actually had something in common. I mean, I can’t even respond to half the stuff she says because I’ve no clue about it. Now, as if that’s not enough by itself, she actually transferred to my school just to be closer to me. More so, she’s trying to match her schedule to mine so we’d have the same classes. (Not really possible because I’m in the top 3 of all my classes, which are acc classes, while she’s in Sp Ed) I’m not trying to be mean, but she’s worse than a kid sibling. I’m in High School and have had a hard enough time fitting in with my friends and girlfriend, if I am being chased around by her, it would make me look even more out of place. I’m real physically frail, so not many people will be around mme. She’s mentally ill, which is sad, but I just can’t stay with her long. I can’t explain it. But think of it like, a foreign exchange student comes along and start acting like you and them have known each other for life, when you have not a thing in common. All I have in common with this cousin is family. That’s it. We’re practically from different planets.

If we weren’t cousins, I’d swear she has a thing for me. And the hardest part is, I’m a real nice person and can’t say no to someone unless I’m outraged. And if that’s the case, it comes out in a HORRIBLE way. I just wish she’d stop clinging to me like we’re best friends. Again, I’m not being mean, we just have nothing in common, so talking is extremely difficult. I’m almost at the point where I want to spend the Holidays at my Friends’ houses instead so I can get away from her without hurting her feelings. I think my heart is a gift AND a curse in this case.
Okay, those of you saying stuff that’s rude, KNOCK IT OFF! I’m just trying to nicely get away from her so I can be with other people. But I’m not sure how to without looking mean.
