Open Question: Could we take legal action over one end not being held up in a contract?

Mar 31, 2010 @ 02:43 pm by

Basically, a year ago a group of people from my college signed up to do an exchange with some students in Japan. We signed contracts agreeing that after they visited us last year, we would return this year, unless for unforeseen circumstances. The man who organised it all said that the whole exchange was already paid for, including flights, food and days out, both when the Japanese group were here and when we go over there.
However, now he has backed out, saying that we have to pay the flights for ourselves - and none of us can afford it, and needless to say we’re all devastated.
The thing is, we signed contracts saying that our leaders company would pay. Is there anything we can do?

Resolved Question: Obesity: Who’s fault is it?

Mar 31, 2010 @ 01:20 pm by

We’ve seen them before. the ones that make you lose your appetite. vomit in your mouth and wonder why on earth there could be starving children.

So whos to blame: Genetics, the individual or the american society?

i’ve been to Europe twice, once on a class trip to France so will not draw conclusions from that since we were surrounded by other tourists. the second time was to visit a foreign exchange student in Hungary. that time i was with a local and no other tourists and we could sit at a restaurant on the street and eat for 2 hours and not one obese person walks by.

So is it just a culture difference? can you blame someone for being overweight?

41.) In multicellular organisms, cells must be able to communicate with each other. Structures that enable most cells to communicate with each other are known as

1. pathogenic agents
2. chloroplasts
3. antibiotics
4. receptor molecules

6.) To communicate between cells, many multicellular animals use

1. nerve signals and respiratory gases
2. respiratory gases and hormones
3. bones and muscles
4. nerve signals and hormones

7.) After a hormone enters the bloodstream, it is transported throughout the body, but the hormone affects only certain cells. The reason only certain cells are affected is that the membranes of these cells have specific

1. receptors
2. tissues
3. antibodies
4. carbohydrates

2.) A green plant is kept in a brightly lighted area for 48 hours. What will most likely occur if the light intensity is reduced slightly during the next 48 hours?

1. Photosynthesis will stop completely.
2. The rate at which nitrogen is used by the plant will increase.
3. The rate at which oxygen is released from the plant will decrease.
4. Glucose production inside each plant cell will increase.

9.) Which term includes all the activities required to keep an organism alive?

1. growth
2. excretion
3. metabolism
4. nutrition

16.) What occurs during the digestion of protein?

1. Specific enzymes break down proteins into amino acids.
2. Specific hormones break down proteins into simple sugars.
3. Specific hormones break down proteins into complex starches.
4. Specific enzymes break down proteins into simple sugars.

19.) The life function of transport in an organism directly involves those activities used to

1. absorb and distribute materials
2. obtain and hydrolyze materials
3. release energy from food
4. produce cellular waste products

26.) The end products of digestion enter the cells of a vertebrate by the process of

1. absorption
2. osmosis
3. emulsification
4. egestion

29.) Stained yeast were added to a paramecium culture, and some of the yeast were ingested by the paramecia. This activity is most closely associated with which life function?

1. synthesis
2. regulation
3. nutrition
4. growth

31.) Which statement best describes the human respiratory system?

1. It is composed of a network of moist passageways that permit air to flow from the external
environment to the lungs.
2. Each cell of the human body is in direct contact with the external environment, and gas
exchange occurs by diffusion
3. The external body surface is kept moist to allow for gas exchange.
4. Gases diffuse across membranes on both the external and internal surfaces of the body.

36.) Which process requires cellular energy?

1. diffusion
2. passive transport
3. active transport
4. osmosis

37.) Small molecules are combined to form large molecules by the life function of

1. regulation
2. excretion
3. transport
4. synthesis

38.) A student squeezes a clothespin as rapidly as possible for one minute. Without stopping to rest, the student continues to squeeze the clothespin for a second minute. At the end of the second minute, the student’s fingers and hand feel very cramped and tired. The physical tiredness and cramping in the muscles in the student’s hand were most likely due to the increased production of

1. ATP
2. waste products
3. oxygen
4. glucose

39.) Which statement best describes the plasma membrane of a living plant cell?

1. It selectively regulates the passage of substances into and out of the cell.
2. It is composed of proteins and carbohydrates only.
3. It has the same permeability to all substances found inside or outside the cell.
4. It is a double protein layer with floating lipid molecules.

Open Question: Can you please proofread this!!!!!?

Mar 31, 2010 @ 08:46 am by

Hi,
I have an assignment due in soon, but i’m not too happy with what i have written. Could you please make comments on any needed adjustments.

‘Lines written in early spring’ by Romantic poet William Wordsworth’s muses not only about the splendor of nature, but exposes the dour state of humankind. This is publicized in the given lines “To her fair works did nature link the human soul that through me ran; And much it greaves my heart to think what man has made of man.” The repetition of the ‘er’ vowel sound in the words “And much it greaves my heart ” gives a sharp rhythm. This is consistent with the mood of the writer as he is having a prod, at humankind.

Being a form of pastoral poetry, these texts are underpinned by the cultural assumptions of the Romantic era. During a time when the anthology of nature was looked upon as innocent, pure and the perfect specimen of creation, in contrast with the destructiveness of humans. Their poems were the social commentaries of their time, as poets such as William Wordsworth, Christopher Maslowe and Edmund Spenser protested against the effects of industrialization, technology and the destruction of nature.

This is still relevant in today’s society. Anywhere you find people and technology, you will be able to find how we have destroyed nature. Think of your house, to build on it, land had to be leveled, excavated to bare dirt. Trees needed to be cut down to build the frame. Now think of you car, metals like iron and aluminum needed to mined and processed to make the frame. All the fumes it spews out, contaminating our air for breathing. The hazardous waste oils and fluids we need to exchange in order to keep it running. Indeed we are feeling the effect of living during what the Bible prophecies would be “Critical times hard to deal with” (Genesis 2:3) This presents Wordsworth unhappiness as he explains, “If such be Nature’s holy plan, Have I not reason to lament, what man has made of man?” Students would gain ideological pleasure from this poem, as its ideas can be related to the world and its problems.

In essence, the poems discourse is that the happiness of nature should be paralleled by the happiness of mankind. With this in mind, I strongly believe the Romantic poem ‘Song: ‘Lines written in early spring” by William Wordsworth, should be included from the Year 12 poetry unit. The reason put forward is its values and beliefs fit hand in hand with the unit’s title “Back to nature”. I profess the poem may not be interesting to the students in the class, but when reading the body of the ideas they certainly, will be immersed by the relevance of “Lines written in early spring” not only had for the Romantic era, but also for us now.

Voting Question: Chinese visa from London for EU national?

Mar 31, 2010 @ 08:00 am by

Hi, I am a student at a university here in London and I am to go to Shanghai as a part of ongoing cultural exchange. I will get an invitation by the Chinese side and my university asked me to obtain a business visa for my trip. The university is providing for the return ticket and accommodation.

What concerns me is that I am EU national and I have been in UK for about six years and now studying in my 5th year - meaning I do not posses the official permanent residency status, but my family and myself have been living here for quite some time.

Am I able to obtain the visa from the London application centre? I cannot really travel to my homeland and stay several days in order to obtain it there due to my course and work requirements.

Anyone with similar experience or possible help?

Thanks!
