Open Question: In CA, can an employer think less of me if I take my rightful lunch & breaks, when my coworker chooses not to?

May 30, 2010 @ 08:02 pm by

I just got this new job as an administrative assistant at an I-20 school (school for foreign exchange students on a visa), and as a recent graduate with a BA in English who is used to working retail jobs, I am very happy to have obtained this. However, it worries me that my fellow co-worker who started off in my position and is now assistant manager, never takes breaks, and when she clocks out for lunch she continues working. She clocks out at her scheduled time, but continues working to catch up. She comes by the office on Saturdays sometimes, without clocking in, and she said she is going to go on Memorial Day, without pay, just to catch up. We already work 9 hours a day, 5 days a week as it is… and it is still not enough!

She is a very nice lady, and I felt comfortable addressing my concern. I told her that while I do love the job and I want to do my best at it during work hours, a work-life balance is important to me. Basically I told her I have a life. Never have they ever told me not to take my breaks, and she even told me that yes, I can take a lunch break and all that… but it really concerns me that the CEO has no problem with her working off the clock like that! She assured me that it is her choice and that it is not expected of one as one grows in the company… but in other big corporations, it is not allowed for people to remain in the work station when they clock out because of labor laws and such.

This seems like a great place for me, being an English major and an aspiring professor. Language schools are the place to start. However, I have a life and I just hope that I will not be considered second best just because I am unwilling to work off the clock without pay like she chooses to do!

Resolved Question: Becoming a foreign exchange student to Italy, IB program?

May 30, 2010 @ 07:10 pm by

so I am interested in going to Italy for a semester either my 2nd semester junior year or 1st semester senior year. I am also signed up to be in the International Baccalaureate Program (aka. IB) This should be okay because it IS INTERNATIONAL! however my school guidance counselor/exchange student adviser hasnt done an exchange in 10 years and also never done one through IB. Any advise? I have to do a lot of the research myself it seems :/

Resolved Question: What NOT to do with an exchange student?

May 30, 2010 @ 07:00 pm by

I will be hosting a german exchange student in my home for two weeks through a program at my high school. Is there anything I should avoid doing with her? We live in a rural area, so I was thinking we would drive places. Is it okay to bring her to meet our family friends out of state? What about bringing her to church even though she is not religious? Shopping? I would like to know some do’s and don’t’s :)

Open Question: First Time HS Student Exchange Program in Guangzhou, China. Advice Please?

May 30, 2010 @ 06:14 pm by

I am a high school senior graduating in a week. This summer I will participate in the Chinese American Student Educational Exchange Program. I’m will be staying with a Host Family for 2 weeks then on the last week, I’m going to spend time with my mother and family before heading back to the San Francisco. My Mandarin + Cantonese is a little broken, but I speak good English. I’ve heard that my host-family might speak English. This is also my first time going to China and I’m just wondering if there are any tips/advice I should take note of .
