I am thinking about creating a video series with the goal of helping people improve and refine their writing technique to a college or semi-professional level. I want to be able to use some real examples to show where improvements can be made, and I think the best source of such examples might be from pieces of writing that I’ve personally helped others to improve.
This is where you would come in. If you’ve got an essay or other piece of writing that you want some feedback on, provide me with some means of contacting you and we can either arrange for you to send me a file, or your can respond to this question with your piece. I think you should be able to privately message me through my Yahoo Answers profile if you don’t want to post your personal info here.
I’ll try look over what you’ve written and do what I can to help. The type of writing I’m looking to help you with is something in essay format, such as a story about something you’ve experienced, a persuasive essay, a compare and contrast essay, or a critique or review of a movie or other work. I’ll point out any grammatical and spelling errors that I notice, but beyond that I’ll give you feedback on the overall structure and flow of the essay. I’ll tell you where I think you might want to add detail, and identify redundancies that you may wish to trim away. I’ll point out areas where I think your word choice or phrasing could use improve, and anything else I think of.
After I help you (if I help you — I might be too busy to get around to helping everyone, or you may send me something that I can’t really find anything wrong with) then I’ll ask you if you mind if I use bits and pieces from your writing as examples in my video series (if I actually follow through and end up making it).
Ideally, our exchange will be a back-and-forth. You send me the original, I reply back with my thoughts, you revise and send it back to me, I give further feedback, and so on, until one of us loses interest or we decide that we can’t improve the paper much more. For this reason, it may not be ideal if you need help with something that’s due tomorrow.
Ideally, you already have something written, though nothing more than a few thousand words in length. It doesn’t have to be good (it’s better for me if it’s not perfect) or complete (I can try to help you figure out how you should continue or finish what you’ve got) but it should be something we can work with.
I suppose there are a couple other things I should make clear. I won’t be writing or rewriting a paper for you — just pointing out things that you may wish to improve. I may give a few small direct suggestions that you could use in your paper, but for the most part I’ll be giving you general advice that you’ll have to apply yourself.
Lastly, my credentials, or lack thereof. I’m not a professional educator. I’m a undergrad college student. I know that I can write on a college level and I understand many of the principles and techniques that allows me to do so. My goal is to help others reach that level, and maybe learn some things in the process myself.
Thanks.
