There are a few foreign exchange students in my class who speak very little English. My friend and I talk to them in there language and translate for them. I’m not fluent in French however, my friend is. I am trying to teach them English because they came to America to learn it. They no how to say some things but there grammer is off and their spelling lol

one of my friend is finishing up her bachelors at a German university, but she is a Chinese citizen who went to Germany to study. Now she wants to get some experience studying in an American university as an exchange student, preferably UIUC.
She wants to know if she needs to take TOEFL for this. She also wants to know if she can write her thesis at the American university and get a double degree, one US, one German.
Again, obviously I can easily find the answers for her if she was applying as a regular international grad student. But she is doing this thru an exchange program. So how does that work then?
Thanks

Today I was with my cousin by the stairs and this girl with a disgusted look on her face started squawking “CHINA CHINA CHINA!” out loud. Yes, we are Chinese but I doubt she knew for sure because I talk to my cousin in English. We are Chinese Americans who were born in the United States. She might be getting annoyed because lately there have been a lot of Korean foreign exchange students have been coming over to study for a year. So I’m wondering she treats them the same. There were people around, because it was almost time for class.
Should I file a complaint or just leave it alone? I’m probably going to come across more people like her in my life time.
Maybe she wasn’t being racist…no derogatory name calling.

I currently live in the United States in California. I would like to go on exchange to Denmark.
So I know that it will cost around 4 to 5 thousand dollars if I get accepted into Rotary Youth Exchange (The chances are pretty high, I am the only one applying in my area and I also have good grades and do lots of Public Speaking, Sports, and School clubs). And if I go through YFU or AFS it will be around 8 to 9 thousand dollars!!!
I need some fund raising ideas because I will likely depart in August of 2012!
>I know I can ask for money from family but that will MAYBE get around $1,000
>One of my teachers owns a coffee shop, and I could maybe ask him to hold a fund raising night there
>I am a sophomore and will be going on exchange for junior year.
THANK YOU!

She’s in Melbourne right now in an exchange program. Like me, she’s American. She’s always wanted to go to Australia due to its incredible biological diversity and wildlife conservation (she’s a biology student). However, she’s been having a really rough time making friends. I’ve told her that people in any country have similarities, and to just hang out at bars or cafes and start talking to people. However (or at least from what she’s told me), many people she meets there automatically don’t like her because she’s American. How can I help her with this?
I know Americans have stereotypes. We’re considered overbearing, racist, right-wing, fanatically Christian, etc. However, at least a huge part of the American population isn’t like that. My friend is pretty left-wing and sweet to everyone, and really non-judgmental when it comes to sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll (as the saying goes). So I know it’s not a personality flaw she needs to work on - it’s external factors.
Anyways, thanks for your help!
