Student Exchange Programs

About 3 months ago a Dutch exchange student arrived at my university. We started hanging out and eventually we became friends. A couple of weeks later,on a trainride from a trip that the university had organised, we ended up sharing the same cabin, and later that night he kissed me and told me that he liked me.
I didn’t say anything back but at that moment I realised that I liked him too, a lot. Later on when he asked me if I liked him I lied and said no because he was leaving in about a week and I didn’t want to start anything because I knew we would both end up getting hurt when he left. However on the day he was leaving I was crushed. When I was hugging him goodbye I burst into tears and he held me tightly and the next thing I knew we were making out.
He’s been gone for about two weeks now, and we text everyday. He tells me he likes and misses me a lot, but the thing is, I have no idea what we’re doing here. Are we dating? And if we are,how do we make it work? I feel like there are some things I can’t tell him because our ‘relationship’ (or whatever it is) is so young.I’m a bit of a skeptic, so if I’m wasting my time here I really would like to know.
