Open Question: What can’t he use for instead of to?

Okay, so I have this foreign exchange student, and I’m helping him out with his English homework, and so I don’t know how to explain to him how he can’t use “for” instead of “to” in this sentance. “I’m going to give a presnent to Jim.” That one is the correct one. The next One is the one he thought it should’ve been. “I’m going to give a present for Jim.” I know it’s bad gramar but I don’t know any rules or anything. Please help!!!
